What exactly do hair relaxers do?

My hair is super wavy, and takes forever to straighten. But if I just leave it, it's a poofy mess. I've tried tons of products but nothing works. I don't want to get a really damaging perm, but I do want something that will make my hair more managable and straighter. What do hair relaxers do? How much do they usually cost? How long do they last? Are they damaging? Thanks. What exactly do hair relaxers do?
I'm a guy who has naturally really wavy hair, and really wanted straight hair so I got it relaxed.

Uhh well they make your hair straight, permanently. Until the new hair grows in that needs to be retouched. The cost depends on whether you're getting it done professionally or not... usually if you do it at the hair place, it depends on the amount of hair you have.

I got a take home kit from my hair cut lady for 10 dollars. :]

I wouldn't say damaging, they give your hair a different texture though. Nothing severe.

Hope this helpsWhat exactly do hair relaxers do?
Hair relaxers use a chemical, usually lye ,to straighten the cuticle, or inner core of your hair and make it lie flat. They last as long as your hair grows, and once it grows out, in about 6-8 weeks, you'll need a retouch, (to apply relaxer only to the roots of your hair of new growth.) I don't know what i would've done without a relaxer! If you don't take care of your hair properly ,then yes, your hair can be damaged. But usually damage is mininal. Keep your hair conditioned and trimmed and you'll be fine. Just know, once you do a relaxer, the only way to start fresh with your natural hair, is to cut all of the relaxed hair off. Revlon fabulaxer, Soft %26amp; beautiful and Dark %26amp; Lovely are some names that i have used and they work great.
It really helps to see a photo of your hair. But relaxers are an aid to the flat iron. They make flat iron work a lot easier and less time in the bathroom fixing your hair. They cost 70.00 and up. It all depends on the health of your hair. You will need a touch up every few months. Chemicals to the hair aren't damageing unless you take care with the right professional products. You will need a shampoo that is used for permed hair and conditioner.

Tip your hair dresser 19 yrs. exp.
they do exactly what it says, it relaxes the curls in your hair so that it looks straighter or less curly/wavy and definately makes the hair more manageable. as any other product for hair that alters the texture/color w/e it is damaging but as long as you take care of your hair and use the appropriate products it will stay looking healthy.
