Hair Relaxers/Straighteners?

I have short, thick curly hair, but not overly kinky or frizzy; I just got a really cute cropped cut, and would love a sleek, straight style to grow on; what are the pros/cons of Hair relaxers/straighteners?--I'm a bit scared to try it, but love the look.Hair Relaxers/Straighteners?
I have had relaxed hair for years, off and on. I love having straight hair because I can attempt a wider range of styles. Depending on your hair type, I'd recommend a standard no-lye relaxer, just to test the waters with.

One thing about relaxers though, they change the texture of your hair PERMANENTLY, so don't expect to just wash it out after 10 washes or so. Certain parts of your hair will be bone straight; other parts will be frizzy and wild. If this seems a bit extreme, try a texturizer instead ;) There are also Gel Relaxers on the market that claim to relax the curl pattern gently, letting you decide what look you want by the amount of combing-through you do, and the length of time it stays on. That may be something to look into as well.

As for a standard relaxer, it can be harsh. It smells like rotten poop when it's on your head, and if your scalp is sensitive you will get a chemical burn. Don't scratch your scalp or comb/brush your scalp a few days before you apply it. I'm an old pro, so I don't really worry about these things, but for a newbie, make sure you follow the instructions to the T, especially the part about the spot test.

For heat straightening, I recommend the Maxiglide flat iron. It's basically a steam iron for your hair. I've been using mine for years now. Good luck, whatever you decide!Hair Relaxers/Straighteners?
a good straightener is CHI. they have a whole line of hair products. They're the best!
Embrase your curls!!! People with straight hair are jealous of us curly girls. We can go any style and any time and they CANT without a lot of time and it falls out anyway. Go to this site. It is the curly girl bible of sites.

If you get a relaxer it will completely straighten your hair. A flat iron will help you straighten it temporarily. If you want to keep your curly hair, a straightener is not the best for your hair. they both can be drying..
