How does hair relaxer work?

I don't really know how it works because my hair's is naturally straight, but not my cousin's. She wants it like me and mentioned hair relaxer. How would that work anyway? Would I just put the cream on her hair and it would get straight? I mean.. chemically straightening hair..?How does hair relaxer work?
